Blog redesign with a focus on depression (who knew?)

Save the people who land here looking for information on water kefir, raw milk outsourcing, or even triple D breasts (oh, are they ever disappointed), most people actually come to this site looking for information on depression.
Acknowledging that this is a blog on nutrients and depression and not a billboard for whatever it is I feel like posting, I thought I’d bring some focus to these columns and help people get down to the good stuff.
As a result, I redesigned the blog with a specific intent: Make the depression information easier to find.
In the process, I had another “ah-ha moment” in late December when I posted on the Gill on the Hill blog about Diane’s Hobbit sighting in the Sequoia National Forest. I cannot believe how many people read that post. That was even before the bigfoot sighting. Really, we should be ashamed for being so obvious about wanting to be entertained. (I cannot believe anyone blogs about that stuff… eh hem.)
My “ah-ha moment” was this: I should reorganize the depression information and I should do it in pictures.

Depression content, in pictures
Behold three new photo albums in the middle column of the blog:
Depression buster foods: These are some of the foods I list in the book Rebuild from Depression (which you should buy here), foods highest in combination of the nutrients that fight depression.
Omega 3 foods: There is a lot of evidence that the lack of Omega 3 fatty acids in our diets can wreak havoc on our brains. Just about everything I’ve posted on this blog is reviewed in one sentence snippets, with pictures! You really can’t plow through information much more quickly and painlessly than that.
Food science graphs: In a round-up of food science articles I have distilled down into one little data visualization, you can read this picture book of food science favorites.
The photo albums are off-site, hosted in TypePad land along with the house blog.
Life after depression
Some Rebuild blog readers have already discovered that I’ve been cheating on the Rebuild blog and working on a project with mt son Frederick, helping him post his homeschool projects on his own little blog and taking pictures with him for our lifestyle microblog “Gill on the Hill.” We are having a really great time.
Our activity is bolstered by the happy discovery on our property — “The Lost Road” — shrouded in mystery and adventure. It’s a great boost to our house stories in this, the house’s centennial year. We have friends visiting us hiking this new discovery and taking their “scary lone hiker portraits” and the buzz is beginning for a big centennial bash. I can’t imagine what kind of bash we will be able to pull off with no scratch and little time but, hey, with the discovery of “The Lost Road,” we are already doing pretty well.
All of this is to say, there really is life after depression. The depression part doesn’t really disappear — you will probably always need to establish structures in your life to keep yourself from sinking back down into the pit. However, things like hiking and playing with children are great structures in themselves and certainly activities I am deficient in.
Sometimes I think I’m having such a good time out there that I may never spend time on the Rebuild blog again, but then I get renewed inspiration.
