Huck Finn Fourth of July? Plus another winner in the giveaway

Fourth-Of-July-1

Only in a small rural community could we ever have such an Independence Day celebration as we had yesterday. We live in the Sequoia National Forest about fifteen minutes from the southern-most stand of Giant Sequoia trees, the largest trees on Earth. Our mountain community houses about 1,000 people, if you cast a wide net, and includes our little community of California Hot Springs. Nothing much happens here unless you are watching carefully and consider "quaint" to be a "happening."

We majored in "cowboy quaint" yesterday with the Third Annual Fourth of July Parade organized by the local 4-H club.

As we prepared for the big event by finding red and blue shirts I laughed to myself about the fact that there has not been a grand marshall in the parade. I described the parade to friends last year as a parade in which you could "enter anything you want and, better yet, be drunk at the time." Last year as the parade passed one guy's house, he handed out beer to the parade entrants. The Sheriff's Deputy was in the parade and my guess is that the cars before and after his missed this key benefit. We discussed entering the parade this year with our trailer hitched to our station wagon, filled it with drunk cowboys. While I looked for a blue shirt, I wondered who would ever be the Grand Marshall in such a small-town cowboy event. I thought about the local cowboy bar, "They could keep tabs on who has consumed the most beer at the Rabbit Foot during the year and make that person the Grand Marshall." On that thought, we headed to the parade.

The parade began at 10 am but there was no overnight camping for a good spot on the sidewalk to watch the parade. In fact, there were no sidewalks to worry about. We discovered that you could arrive at 9:50 am and still get shade parking in the heart of parade festivities. You might miss the $2 breakfast burritos but if you are on a grain-free diet, that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Cyclists

At just after 10 am, the Sheriff's Deputy led the group in the Star Spangled Banner. 4-H members then led the parade on bicycles or scooters. Two girls travel on foot walking their dogs. I watched the 4-H members come around the bend.

"Are we going a second time?" the children asked as they ended the parade loop.

"Yes!" I shouted. "One more loop!" Other adults began to direct them up the hill to do the parade again. "You're doing a second loop," I shouted as cars reached my vantage point at the end of the parade loop. I am sure the actual parade organizers appreciated my display of leadership.

After the children passed, I noticed in the distance a red jeep with Norma, the bartender at the local cowboy bar The Rabbit Foot, dressed in a red clown wig and sitting in the jeep like the Fourth of July queen waving to the crowd.

The front of the jeep bore a sign: "Grand Marshall."

"Perfect!" I laughed to myself. I really do think like a mountain cowboy.

Grand-Marshall

Following the Grand Marshall were a selection of antique cars, including one with passengers in dress period to the car, the county, state, and federal fire trucks, the volunteer patrol for the Sheriff's Department, and the volunteer ambulance service. Some folks rode ATVs and others road horses. My favorite horses had red, white, and blue stars painted on their hind-ends.

Julie road her horse with her baby Rowdy on her hip. Julie was my "due date buddy" back in December, due just a day or two before me. Rowdy is two weeks older than Alastair and also share their ability to confuse everyone with their names. "Alastair? She she is precious. Did you make that name up?" "Rowdy? Is that a name or a comment on his behavior?"

As the parade ended, one fire truck stayed to provide us with picture opportunities. Two horse riders made their horses available to children for riding. Frederick had a great time.

As we drove home exhausted from the heat and the activity, we passed The Rabbit Foot and saw the Grand Marshall jeep parked right outside. The parade really ended right there at that cowboy bar. Next year perhaps I'll direct all of the parade traffic that way. "Do one more loop then head to the bar for beer! No, I don't have a cold one here in my baby carrier!"

Giveaway winner

In all of this excitement and in the presence of a teething baby, I only just drew a name in the ongoing supplement give-away. If you have been reading the announcements, you may know that Pilar expressed skepticism that she could ever winner having only left a comment. Diane, for instance, earned a whole lot of points "friending" me on Facebook, posting a story on her blog about this blog, and just about everything else except put something on "Stumble Upon." It turns out that Marjorie won the first drawing with only a comment and our next two winners also won only by leaving a comment. Each time I have mentioned that if you were going to put money on any particular person winning, you would want to bet on Diane. However, so many people are entered just with a comment that sole-commenters are still the most likely winners. In any case, the last three people have won simply by posting a comment.

All that said, our experiment continues.

Drum roll please.....

The winning ticket says: "Diane FB." This is shorthand for "Diane's ticket she earned by friending me on Facebook."

Of course, I laughed out loud when I read the ticket. Diane at the Peaceful Acres blog needs to contact me within a week of this post to claim her prize. I suggest she also give a speech here in the comments. :) Diane won the brain-building package of Omega 3 oil, B complex, and magnesium.

Join the contest if you haven't already. Leave a comment on this blog anywhere about anything. That's it. I will put your name in the colander of tickets for the giveaways all through July. The next winner gets the desiccated liver product (the Ultra 40 product listed on this page). You can earn more tickets like Diane by doing any of the following:

• Friend me or follow me on Facebook(here) or Twitter(here): 1 point each
• Stumble this entry, one of the food science pages, or anything that has caught your fancy.: 1 point.

Ha...too funny!

I have been following Amanda here for over 2 yrs....I get an email alert on new postings and I read them all the time. I now have Amanda on RSS feed even though I get the email alert. But I still haven't figured out the Stumble Upon!!! ;-) Weird. I've been commenting here even when I was all alone. I've posted many times and left many links to Amanda on forums and the like. I prayed for and worried about Amanda during her latest pregnancy....all because she didn't post often enough!!! Amanda got pregnant just as I was starting menopause!!! We laughed over whether I ought to do a pregnancy test....well, I eventually did and it was thankfully negative....because at my age....I really need the Omega 3 supp for memory leakage!!!! I've learned so much from Amanda and even though I haven't suffered....lately....from depression, it always helps as she says to do the right things to stay out of the pit!! AND whenever there is an article by Amanda in one of my favorite magazines.....I say, "my friend Amanda wrote this!"

Well, there you go. I think Amanda Rose is really swell! And you should always read her blog and buy her book whether she's giving anything away or not.

Thank you for the gift.

How do I get you my address??? I'll leave it here if you won't publish it....as I know you read these lovely comments! Thanks again. And I really meant that I'd like to do a review on your new book. :D

Diane,

You are so kind. It's too bad you don't live next door. I can use all of the affirmation I can get. :)

I had forgotten about the menopause! That was classic!

Amanda

About

Amanda Rose, Ph.D., is a political scientist and author of "Rebuild from Depression," on the link between nutrient deficiencies and depression. She has been depression-free for over four years, even during the recent pregnancy of her second child. Read her postpartum depression success story.

Depression buster foods

From an analysis of over 5,000 foods in the USDA nutrient database, "depression buster foods" are the foods highest in combination of the seven nutrients most commonly associated with depression. Brains need nutrients to be healthy, particularly those nutrients in these foods for depression. The depression buster food list is published in the book "Rebuild from Depression." A subset are displayed here in the depression buster photo album.

Omega 3 foods

Omega 3 fatty acids are critical for brain health and they are disappearing in the Western diet. You need to consume more Omega 3s and fewer Omega 6s. These photos and descriptions of Omega 3 foods will offer you some guidance. Omega 3 fatty acids are one nutrient that helps fight depression. Gill on the Hill:
Life after depression

There really is life after depression. I am so excited by that point, in fact, that I neglect this blog and find fun/quirky projects to do with my family. We live in the Sequoia National Forest in a house (and former brothel) designed by Irving Gill. My 7-year-old son Frederick and I chronicle our adventures at Gill on the Hill when we're not exploring. Frederick posts some of his homeschool projects at "Frankly Frederick."
