Bowling for Soup: Rock Group and Depression Buster?

Angela nominates the rock group "Bowling for Soup" as a rock group and depression buster. She says:

This is sorta a two in one punch: bowling gets the physical activity going and soup is always good for the body and soul (as long as it is all natural). So, you get your healthy eats and a good amount of exercise along with it. :)

I asked Angela about her favorite soup. She says:

I prefer Beef Stew or Chicken N Dumplings...I've gotta experiment with fermented sourdough for my dumplings to make it a little more healthy.

My mom and I are now totally intrigued at the idea of making sourdough dumplings, particularly now that the weather is changing and chicken and dumplings would be an extra special treat.

Depression Buster?

When you visit the Bowling for Soup website, you will get a sampling of the band's music. It is good. I realize that my prior lack of knowledge of Bowling for Soup reveals my sheltered lifestyle but I just wanted to toss it out there for anyone else as sheltered as I am, that you might want to listen to the music. Not all of the lyrics are uplifting but hey, it's worth a listen.

And Angela is right about bowling helping reduce depression. Physical activity, particularly activity that raises your heart rate, will increase your serotonin levels (a feel-good hormone healthy bodies make). In fact there have been studies that show exercise more effective than antidepressants at raising serotonin. The dilemma here, of course, is that you are unlikely to exercise when you are in the bottom of a depressive pit. What you can do is if you cycle out of that pit (and if you don't you are probably not reading this blog), you can focus on exercise on the days you are feeling well. If you are able to exercise, you will probably find that your down cycles come a little less often and are not quite as bad.

In terms of the soup, soup can definitely be a "depression buster food" in the sense I use here and in the book. It depends, of course, on what you put in it. Beef stew is a great option. It is high in vitamins and minerals that help us fight depression. If the steer has been raised on pasture, it will also have a beneficial balance of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids.

But any soup made with bone broth is going to be a mineral-rich meal for you. You can read more about making your own bone broth or using vegetables to make a vegetarian broth. My mom has provided some of her favorite simple soup recipes for you this fall (or of course for the beginning of spring as the case may be).

Chicken and Sourdough Dumplings recipe:

It uses a can of evaporated milk and a can of cream of chicken soup, but you could easily substitute those for homemade soup with added cream.

About

Amanda Rose, Ph.D., is a political scientist and author of "Rebuild from Depression," on the link between nutrient deficiencies and depression. She has been depression-free for over four years, even during the recent pregnancy of her second child. Read her postpartum depression success story.

Depression buster foods

From an analysis of over 5,000 foods in the USDA nutrient database, "depression buster foods" are the foods highest in combination of the seven nutrients most commonly associated with depression. Brains need nutrients to be healthy, particularly those nutrients in these foods for depression. The depression buster food list is published in the book "Rebuild from Depression." A subset are displayed here in the depression buster photo album.

Omega 3 foods

Omega 3 fatty acids are critical for brain health and they are disappearing in the Western diet. You need to consume more Omega 3s and fewer Omega 6s. These photos and descriptions of Omega 3 foods will offer you some guidance. Omega 3 fatty acids are one nutrient that helps fight depression. Read more about the Rebuild philosophy on depression-fighting foods.

Gill on the Hill:
Life after depression

There really is life after depression. I am so excited by that point, in fact, that I neglect this blog and find fun/quirky projects to do with my family. We live in the Sequoia National Forest in a house (and former brothel) designed by Irving Gill. My 7-year-old son Frederick and I chronicle our adventures at Gill on the Hill when we're not exploring. Frederick posts some of his homeschool projects at "Frankly Frederick."
